What is Gemini in Chrome for India?

Gemini in Chrome is Google's native AI assistant integrated directly into the Chrome browser. It was originally launched in the United States in January 2026, then expanded to India, Canada, and New Zealand on March 10-11, 2026. As of May 23, 2026, the feature is live in 10 markets: US, India, Canada, New Zealand, plus 7 APAC markets. The UK, Switzerland, and European Union are still awaiting regulatory clearance.

The India rollout is powered by Gemini 3.1 and includes support for 8 Indian languages beyond English: Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Telugu, and Tamil. This makes it one of the most linguistically inclusive AI browsers available for the Indian market.

Users see an "Ask Gemini" or Gemini icon in the top right of the Chrome tab bar. Clicking it opens a sidebar assistant that can operate on the current tab, across multiple open tabs, or through voice conversation via Gemini Live.

Summarize articles, clarify complex concepts, or find specific information based on the context of open tabs
Draft emails and social media posts directly in the browser without switching tabs
Generate images through Nano Banana 2 integration, transforming photos or creating new images

Work across multiple open tabs to compare products, plan trips, or consolidate research

Chrome is already your primary browser standard across the organization

How does Gemini in Chrome fit APAC operations?

Three considerations specific to APAC.

Indian language coverage.

The 8 Indian language support is genuinely differentiated. Most global AI tools handle Hindi reasonably well but struggle with Bengali, Marathi, or Tamil at production quality. Gemini in Chrome's coverage across these languages makes it viable for consumer-facing content generation, customer support drafting, and internal communications across multilingual Indian operations.

APAC regional availability.

Beyond India, the tool is live in 7 additional APAC markets as of May 2026. Japan received a delayed iOS rollout due to local regulatory issues but has desktop coverage. For regional groups operating across Singapore, Malaysia, and other APAC markets, the tool is broadly available.

Enterprise data governance.

Google Workspace admin controls determine whether the Gemini app service and Chrome Gemini settings are enabled for your organization. This means enterprise IT can enforce policies at the domain level, restrict Gemini for certain user groups, or turn it off entirely if compliance requires.

The honest limitations

Six real limitations to plan around.

Platform exclusions.

Linux is not supported. Non-Plus Chromebooks are out of scope. Android integration only started in late June 2026, initially in the United States. Full Android rollout to India is not yet confirmed as of July 2026.

Data governance depth.

For most enterprise use cases the standard Workspace controls are sufficient. For highly regulated industries (banking, healthcare, government), the Workspace AI data handling may not meet all jurisdictional requirements. Verify data residency and cross-border transfer specifics with Google before deployment in sensitive environments.

Not all Indian languages are equal.

Google supports 8 Indian languages but real-world performance quality varies. Hindi and English are strongest. Regional languages like Tamil, Bengali, and Marathi are usable but should be tested for your specific use cases before enterprise deployment.

Feature velocity favours US market.

Google typically rolls out new Chrome AI features to the US first, then expands to other markets. India users may wait weeks or months for capabilities that US users already have.

Lock-in to Chrome ecosystem.

The tool works only in Chrome browser. If your organization uses Edge, Safari, or Firefox as an alternative, users must switch to access Gemini in Chrome features.

Sensitive action confirmations.

Gemini in Chrome asks for confirmation before taking sensitive actions like sending emails or adding calendar events. This is a safety feature but adds friction to workflows where autonomous action would be preferred.

For enterprises considering Google Workspace primarily for Gemini AI features, current Workspace Business Standard pricing is roughly USD $12 per user per month. Workspace Enterprise pricing varies by contract and typically starts around USD $30 per user per month.

Some more agentic capabilities (like Chrome taking over the browser to complete tasks) are limited to US-based AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers as of July 2026, not yet available in India.

Three main alternatives to evaluate.

Microsoft Copilot in Edge.

Integrated into Edge browser with Microsoft 365 Copilot features. Better fit if your organization is Microsoft 365-centric. Similar functionality with different data governance and pricing.

Perplexity Comet browser.

AI-native browser purpose-built for AI research and browsing workflows. More capable on complex multi-source research. Requires separate browser adoption, which is a bigger organizational change than adding Gemini to existing Chrome deployment.

ChatGPT browser extensions (Sider, Superpower ChatGPT).

Third-party extensions that add ChatGPT to Chrome. More flexibility on which model to use, but less deeply integrated with browser context.
