What is Sarvam AI?

Sarvam AI is India's leading sovereign AI company, headquartered in Bengaluru. Founded in August 2023 by Vivek Raghavan (architect of Aadhaar's biometric systems) and Pratyush Kumar (former researcher at IBM and Microsoft, and AI4Bharat at IIT Madras).

The company's positioning is "The Aadhaar of AI." It aims to build India's own AI infrastructure across the full stack: foundation models, inference infrastructure, voice AI, document intelligence, and enterprise applications. All designed for Indian languages, Indian speech patterns, and Indian enterprise use cases.

On June 15, 2026, Sarvam AI became India's newest AI unicorn after raising $234 million in the first close of a Series B targeting $300 million total, at a post-money valuation of $1.5 billion. HCLTech led the round as strategic investor with $150 million for a 10.46% stake. Bessemer Venture Partners co-led. Existing investors Khosla Ventures and Peak XV Partners returned.

The unicorn milestone landed in the same window as the US government's June 12, 2026 directive to Anthropic to restrict foreign access to its most advanced models. That policy shift moved sovereign AI from a talking point to an operational risk for any enterprise built on US frontier models. Sarvam's funding round arrived as India's answer to that risk.

What does Sarvam AI actually do?

Sarvam operates across the AI stack with several distinct products:

Foundation models:

  • Sarvam 30B: Optimized for edge deployment on consumer hardware. Efficient for on-device inference across mobile and embedded scenarios.
  • Sarvam 105B: Mixture-of-experts model. Reportedly matches or exceeds larger reasoning models in knowledge, reasoning, and agentic benchmarks. Trained from scratch on India's linguistic diversity.

Voice AI:

  • Saaras V3: Speech model supporting all 22 Indian scheduled languages. Handles Indian speech patterns, dialects, and mixed-language usage patterns (Hinglish, code-switching) that Western models struggle with.

Document intelligence:

  • Sarvam Vision: OCR technology designed for handwriting and Indian-language documents. Currently used to digitize over 35 million pages including insurance forms and legacy land records.

Application platforms:

  • Chanakya: Defence and government-focused platform for sensitive workloads.
  • Indus: Consumer-facing application platform.

Enterprise platform:

  • Full-stack sovereign AI offering for enterprises to own and operate their own AI infrastructure (announced as part of Series B strategy).

Who is Sarvam AI for?

Sarvam AI fits organizations where the following are true:

  • Your enterprise operates in India or serves Indian customers at meaningful scale
  • Your workflows involve Indian languages, particularly beyond Hindi
  • You have sovereign AI requirements (regulatory, procurement, or strategic reasons to avoid US or Chinese frontier models)
  • You are building voice AI applications for Indian consumer or enterprise users
  • You need document AI capable of handling Indian language handwritten and legacy documents
  • You are an Indian government agency or working with government procurement rules

Sarvam AI does NOT fit organizations where the following are true:

  • Your primary AI workloads are English-only knowledge work
  • You need the absolute frontier performance of GPT-5, Claude Fable 5, or Gemini 3 Pro
  • Your enterprise is outside India with no meaningful India operations
  • Your AI budget requires the lowest-cost inference (Sarvam models may cost more than optimized inference on OpenAI or Anthropic infrastructure in some scenarios)

How does Sarvam AI fit APAC operations?

Three considerations for APAC-specific context.

India-first sovereign AI.

Sarvam AI is positioned as the trusted, locally controlled option for Indian workloads. For Indian banks, insurers, government departments, and software firms currently building around US frontier models, Sarvam offers an alternative when access to foreign models becomes a political or regulatory risk. The June 2026 Anthropic Fable 5 / Mythos 5 restriction event made this risk operational rather than hypothetical.

Voice AI at scale.

Sarvam's conversational AI platform handles more than 2 million interactions per day. Speech models transcribe more than 500,000 hours of audio per month. Reference deployments include Razorpay (voice-led commerce), Swiggy (voice interactions), Ministry of Agriculture (data collection from 17 million farmers), and a leading insurer (policy renewals for 45 million policyholders). This is production-scale voice AI, not pilots.

HCLTech distribution channel.

The $150M HCLTech investment gives Sarvam distribution into HCLTech's global enterprise client network. For APAC CEOs already working with HCLTech on IT services, Sarvam AI becomes a natural conversation. For APAC CEOs not working with HCLTech, direct engagement with Sarvam is still available.

The honest limitations

Six real limitations to plan around.

Frontier performance gap.

Sarvam's 105B model is competitive on reasoning benchmarks but does not match the absolute frontier (Anthropic's Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5, OpenAI's most advanced models). For workloads where absolute model quality drives business outcomes, foreign frontier models still win on pure capability.

Enterprise product depth is emerging.

The full-stack sovereign AI offering for enterprises was announced as part of the Series B strategy. Detailed product SLAs, pricing, and support commitments are still being defined.

Concentrated market fit.

Sarvam is built specifically for Indian workloads and Indian language contexts. For enterprises operating outside India with no India presence, the fit is weaker than global platforms.

Compute costs remain high.

Training and running frontier AI models is expensive. Sarvam's burn rate is estimated at $1.5-2.5 million per month. The $234M Series B provides approximately 48+ months of runway, but sustained frontier development requires ongoing capital.

Ecosystem still forming.

Developer tooling, integration partners, and third-party support for Sarvam models is less mature than for OpenAI, Anthropic, or Google. Expect internal engineering effort for early enterprise deployments.

Sovereign AI premium.

Choosing Sarvam over cheaper foreign frontier APIs is partly a strategic choice, not purely an economic one. Buyers should be clear that sovereign AI carries a premium versus commodity inference costs.

Pricing and access reality

Sarvam AI does not publish enterprise pricing. Access depends on the specific product and deployment model:

  • Foundation models (Sarvam 30B, 105B): Available for enterprise licensing and deployment. Contact Sarvam for pricing.
  • Voice AI (Saaras V3): API access. Volume-based pricing.
  • Sarvam Vision (OCR): Enterprise licensing.
  • Chanakya and Indus platforms: Direct engagement with Sarvam.

Government deployments are supported through the IndiaAI Mission framework with government-supported pricing.

For enterprise buyers, HCLTech's partnership means Sarvam AI capabilities are increasingly available through HCLTech's enterprise engagement model as well as direct Sarvam contracts.

How Sarvam AI compares to alternatives

Three main alternatives to evaluate.

OpenAI Enterprise / Anthropic Claude for Enterprise.

Absolute frontier performance. Better English-only knowledge work. Higher-quality reasoning on complex tasks. Foreign hosted, subject to US regulatory decisions. More expensive per token in some scenarios.

Google Vertex AI (Gemini models).

Frontier performance with India data residency available. Deeply integrated with Google Workspace and Google Cloud. Different sovereignty posture than Sarvam.

Krutrim, Ola AI, and other Indian foundation models.

Also positioned as sovereign AI options. Different technical trade-offs and different corporate backing.

Sarvam AI's positioning is distinct: the highest-profile sovereign AI player in India, IndiaAI Mission first pick, and now HCLTech's strategic AI partner. For India-first workloads, Sarvam is the most complete answer to the sovereign AI question.

The decision question for your leadership team

What percentage of our AI stack should be sovereign, and if we build sovereign capacity, do we build on Sarvam AI's foundation models, on an open-source base, or on both?

If you cannot answer that question and you operate in India or serve Indian customers, Sarvam AI deserves to be on your sovereign AI evaluation shortlist.

Frequently asked questions

Are Sarvam AI's models open-source?

Sarvam has released some models as open-source, including Sarvam 30B and Sarvam 105B in earlier versions. Enterprise deployment of the current versions typically involves licensing arrangements. Verify current open-source status at sarvam.ai.

Can Sarvam AI models run on-premises or in a customer's own cloud?

Sarvam's full-stack sovereign AI offering announced in June 2026 explicitly targets enterprises that want to own and operate their own AI infrastructure. Specific deployment options should be verified with Sarvam.

Does Sarvam AI compete with Anthropic and OpenAI for enterprise buyers?

Yes, for India-specific workloads and sovereign AI use cases. Sarvam is not competing on pure English-language frontier model performance. It is competing on Indian language coverage, sovereignty, and regulatory alignment for Indian buyers.

What is the IndiaAI Mission?

The IndiaAI Mission is the Indian government's AI development programme with an outlay of over Rs 10,000 crore. Sarvam AI was the first startup selected to build an indigenous foundation model under this initiative and has received Rs 246.72 crore in financial and compute support.

Is Sarvam AI available outside India?

The company is India-focused but products are technically available to enterprises anywhere. The strategic fit is strongest for India-operating enterprises. HCLTech's global client network provides one distribution path for enterprises outside India that want Sarvam capabilities.

What is the Gujarat Sovereign AI Park?

Sarvam signed an MoU on March 18, 2026 to set up a Sovereign AI Park in Gandhinagar, Gujarat with advanced compute infrastructure, R&D centres, and youth skilling facilities.
